Walter Rehling

Walter H. Rehling, 91, of Bismarck, ND, passed away on March 1, 2025 in a Mandan Care Center. 

Services will be held at 11:00 AM, Monday, March 10, at Shepherd of the Valley, 801 E Denver Ave, Bismarck. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. 

Burial will be held at 2:00 PM at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan. 

Walter was born on the farm in Mercer County with a Hebron, ND address on April 9, 1933. 

He received his G.E.D while in the Airforce. He earned a teaching certificate from the University of Maryland, a Bachelor of College Studies from Dickinson State University and a Chartered Life Underwriter at Bryn Mawr in Pennsylvania. 

Walter married Bernice Gallwas on September 21, 1952 in Hazen, ND. 

He retired from the United States Air Force as a Master Sergeant after 20 years. He became a State Farm Insurance Agent from 1971 to 1995. Walter and Bernice retired and moved to Hebron in 1998 and later moved to Bismarck in 2004. 

Walter's career in public service was marked by significant contributions to both Hebron and Dickinson, where he held the position of Mayor of Hebron from 1974 to 1975 and served as City Commissioner of Dickinson from 1988 to 1992. His commitment extended beyond politics; he was an active member of the Germans from Russia Society, serving as President from 1996 to 2002 and remaining a lifetime member. His dedication to veterans was evident through his role in the Honor Guard for the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery from 2006 to 2016, and as Commander of the VFW Post 1326 in Bismarck from 2007 to 2010. He was a member of the American Legion in Hebron, ND and the Western Auto Club in Dickinson, ND. 

Walter's faith was a cornerstone of his life. He was a cherished member and Elder of Zion Lutheran Church in Glen Ullin and was also involved with Redeemer Lutheran Church in Dickinson and Shepherd of the Valley Church in Bismarck. His love for music was evident in his long-standing participation with the Dickinson German Singers Group, where he shared his joy for singing and played guitar.

Walter was not just a dedicated public servant but also enjoyed a rich array of hobbies. He took delight in golfing, reading, and playing slow pitch softball for several years in Dickinson. His multifaceted interests and talents made him a beloved figure among friends and family alike.

Walter is survived by his wife of 72 years, Bernice Rehling; children, Nancy (Wayne) Eggert, Dickinson; Bryan (Donna) Rehling, Eureka, CA; Cindi (Jim) Bechtold, Bismarck; Steven Rehling, Bakersfield, CA; and Shari (Greg) Zeis, Bismarck; grandchildren, Michelle (Ben) Herrly, Mike Eggert and Marc (Sonya) Eggert, Jasmine Huffman, Lonyx Landry, Jermey Bechtold and Jason Bechtold, Heather (Doug) Julian, Jennifer (James) Willis, and Lexi Zeis and Mikayla Zeis; 10 great-grandchildren; and his sister, Olga (Rehling) Mann. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Louise (Flemmer) Rehling; brothers, David and Oscar Rehling; sister-in-law, Violet Rehling; brother-in-law, Ewald Mann; grandson, Branden Rehling; two nephews and two nieces.
