Bill was born on December 7th, 1944 in Harvey, ND to William and Otillie (Dockter) Ehrman. He grew up on the family farm and attended a one room country school. He continued his education in Drake, ND, graduating from Drake High School in 1962 (or as he would say with a little smirk “Drake University”). He continued his education at North Dakota State University (Go Bison!) graduating in 1967 with a degree in civil engineering. Shortly after graduation he used his engineering skills to serve his country in the US Army stationed in Frankfurt, Germany from 1967 to 1969. Upon completion of his service he moved to Bismarck, ND where he worked as a professional engineer for 39 years in the design division of the North Dakota Department of Transportation. On December 28th, 1973 he married the love of his life, Myra, and they raised their family and built their life together in the community of Bismarck.
His family was everything to him. He was a loving and kind father to his two children, Missy and Matt, and papa to his six grandchildren. He was always there to encourage and support his children and grandchildren, instilling the belief in them that they could accomplish anything they wanted to do. You could always depend on him for advice. He was the man who just knew how everything worked, he could fix almost anything (if he couldn’t, he valued the work of the person who could), and if a problem could be solved with something made of wood…well… consider it done. He was very interested in the kids’ hobbies and loved cheering for them in all of their activities (despite rain, sleet, or snow).
He was passionate about the outdoors and he was always up for an adventure, big or small. He was in his element camping and fishing along the Missouri river, setting up makeshift swings for the kids and finding a prairie rose for Myra, taking road trips out to Washington to visit his family and stroll along the beach, and on family vacations anywhere “out West”. His family homestead held a special place in his heart and he would regularly take family and friends there to visit the nearby towns of Kief and Drake, explore, hunt, and check the harvest.
Bill’s faith in the Lord guided his approach to life. He and Myra were longstanding members of Bismarck Baptist Church where he served in various roles. His faith was quiet and strong; demonstrated by always having time for friends and family, keeping the garage door open to neighbors, and lending a helping hand. He genuinely cared for people and could start a conversation with anybody.
We will never forget his deep love of his family, light-hearted spirit, love of a good laugh and a little tease, and all of his “know how”. He will be dearly missed and always remembered.
He is preceded in death by parents, William and Otillie Ehrman; mother and father-in-law, Edward and Leona Kiemele; sisters Elaine (Leonard) Kost and Ardella (Blayne) Myhre; brothers-in-law Leo Kessler and Wayne Kiemele.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Myra; children Melissa (Nathan) Seibel and Matthew (Elana) Ehrman; grandchildren Benjamin, Kaleb and Asher Seibel; Parker, Riley and Annisten Ehrman; sister Dorothy Kesler; sisters-in-law Pam Kiemele and Eileen Kiemele and many nieces and nephews.
