William "Bill" Leier has left us for his well-earned heavenly home on January 21, 2024. He was 92 amazing years old and passed while in Weslaco, Texas, his favorite winter home. Cremation has taken place.
Mass of Christian burial will be held Friday, February 9th, 2024 at 10:00 am at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 1919 N, 2nd St, Bismarck.
Visitation will be from 5:00-7:00 PM followed by a rosary/vigil service and some sharing time, Thursday, February 8th at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Parkway, Bismarck.
Bill was born in Balfour, ND on February 7, 1931 to Peter and Agatha Leier. He was raised on the family farm with his 13 siblings. After completing high school, he was drafted into the Army. Upon completion of his training at Camp Rucker Alabama, he was sent to Korea. His time there was cut short by a mortar shell which cost him his left leg. After returning home, he married his love, Jackie Thomssen and began their 51 years of marriage together before her unexpected death in 2003. They lived in Wahpeton while he completed draftsman school. Then moved to Fargo, ND where they welcomed their first son Kurt, followed later by daughter Tami and their son, Wade.
His work with Pella moved them on to Minot and Bismarck. He started his own business, B & D Supply becoming well known as an honest hard-working guy. He worked there until retirement. Bill and Jackie loved camping which led to a motor home, and lots of wonderful time spent traveling with the ND family Motorcoach Association and the Dakota Ramblers.
Several years after losing Jackie, he met a new best friend and "dancing partner" Alice Bergan and her wonderful family. They spent 14 years together in Valley City, ND and Weslaco, TX, caring for each other and enjoying time with their Texas friends until his last dance.
He was "Uncle Willie" to many nieces and nephews and a very special Grandpa to 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, with one more on the way. The fact that he was missing a leg never slowed him down and he had a handshake that was unforgettable- strong, firm and at often described as bone-crushing!
One of the biggest highlights in his life was the honor of being chosen to be on the Veterans Honor Flight of ND/MN in 2022 and to have his son Kurt accompany him. He loved telling the story of the trip and how wonderful all the people of that organization treated him and the other veterans.
So happy to have shared in his amazing life are his children, Kurt (Bobbi) Leier, Bismarck, Tami (Remy) Stecher, Bismarck, Wade (Mary) Leier, Scottsdale, AZ; his grandchildren, Amy (Jim) Yurcak, Eagle Co., Holly Stecher, Denver CO, Ryan Stecher, Avon, CO, Casey Leier, Lakewood, CO, Remigius (Reggie) (Anna) Stecher, Portland OR, Taylor Leier, Cumming, GA, Colten (Blair) Leier, Parker, CO., Kylan (Lauren) Stecher, Portland, OR, Tanner Leier, Bismarck, ND, Madison (Alex) Mann, Peoria, AZ, Nicole (Austin) Leier, Scottsdale, AZ; great-grands, Mason, Cassandra, Leilani, Lukas, Ivy, Hayley, Charlotte, Shiloh; his brothers, Felix and Jim; sisters, Bernadine, Arlene, Josephine, Jeanie, and Beverly and best friend and partner, Alice Bergan.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jackie; his parents; brothers, Emmanuel and Francis; sisters, Kaye, Rose, Johanna, Veronica and Dorothy and son-in-law, Remigius (Remy) Stecher.
Because of the great joy it brought to him, in lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to the Veterans Honor Flight of ND/MN.
