Doris was born in Driscoll on December 27, 1932, to Clifford and Hazel (Smith) Nelson.
She graduated from Driscoll High School in 1949. She married Melvin Stein on June 11, 1949, in Tuttle. They began their life in Driscoll where Lennis, Keith and Ken were born. Keith passed on after a difficult illness at age 2. They then moved to Steele where the rest of the clan were born, Rob, Ruth and Darin. After living for years in Steele, Doris and Mel bought a farm just on the north side of the Steele interstate exchange where they raised small grains and cattle. Doris loved family and family gatherings, always preparing an abundance of food. She enjoyed gardening, sewing those special jean quilts, crocheting, traveling, casinos, and coffee with the ladies. When Mel had the John Deere dealership, Doris did the bookkeeping for the business. She then worked at Sherman Electric for many years doing Harry’s bookkeeping, manning the phone, and helping customers. She also volunteered with the Kidder County ambulance.
Doris will be missed by her daughter, Ruth (Gregg) Nelson; son, Darin; daughters-in-law, Gail Stein and Lynn Stein; son-in-law, John Steiner, along with grandchildren; Jill (Cleetus) and sons, Tristan and Taylor; Sara (Casey) and daughter, Abigail; Kristen; Corey (Marissa); Jamie (Josh) and sons Rylan and Brenner; Sheri (Matt) and children Hannah, Regan, Jonah, and Ainslee; Michelle (Pat) and daughter, Lily; Kayla (Morgan); Maddy; and Joshua.
Doris was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin; daughter, Lennis; sons, Keith, Ken and Rob; great-granddaughter, Kailee; and her brothers, Harvey, Leonard, Wendell, DuWayne, Curtis and Dale.
