Reuben Leroy Steinert, 84, Bismarck, passed away into the loving arms of Jesus on March 28, 2022. 

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, April 2 at Mission Evangelical Free Church, Wilton. A service livestream will be available on the funeral home’s website.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Pkwy, Bismarck. A friends/family service will begin at 7 p.m.

Reuben was born to William and Annie (Hochhalter) Steinert on November 2, 1937. He lived north of Regan and attended Pleasant View School. Reuben worked at a grocery store during his high school years and graduated in 1956 from Bismarck High School. During the summers, he helped his parents and neighboring farmers. After graduating, he began his lifelong farming occupation of 47 years. 

Reuben met Nyleen Vander Vorst on a blind date in Bismarck and were later married on October 9, 1964, in Westfield. They lived north of Regan for two years and then moved east of Wilton to a farm which they purchased a few years later. Their three children were raised on the farm. They moved to Bismarck in 2019. 

He was a member of the Mission Evangelical Free Church. He served on the church board for many years, taught Sunday School, and helped with AWANA and youth group. He was known to play softball or volleyball with any youth.  He also enjoyed listening to music and singing with the church quartet. 

After Reuben retired, he enjoyed working in the garden and his big potato patch. He liked to keep the yard neat and spent many hours on the lawn mower. 

He and Nyleen enjoyed traveling to Belgium, some of the eastern and southern states as well as Canada to visit family and friends. They spent 18 years wintering in Bonita Springs, Florida. Reuben loved the warm weather and sunshine. He enjoyed playing shuffleboard, bocce ball and volleyball. He also watched softball games, and of course, ate a hot dog while watching the games. Many evenings were spent playing games with family and friends from many different states. If you knew Reuben, you know he was always joking and teasing. He was disappointed that he couldn’t spend this winter in Florida because of health reasons. 

Reuben will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 57 years, Nyleen; daughters, Janell (Elwood) Erickson and Melanie (Jim) Stickler; grandchildren, Erin (Derek) Miller, Evan (Tatum) Erickson, Elery (Lewis) Polkow, Erika Erickson, Allison Stickler, Jessica (Jake) Hladik, Jackie Stickler, and Kylee Steinert; four great-grandchildren, Macie, Grayson, Hudson, Tennlie Miller, and one on the way; sisters, Ruby (Warren) Asplund Betz, Helen Backman, and Dorothy (Dale) Betz; brothers-in-law, Curt (Viv) Vander Vorst and Rod Tschritter; sisters-in-law, Bea (Ernie) Vollan, Elaine Steinert, Tess Vander Vorst, Deb (Craig) Renner, and Patty (Darel) Tschritter; and also many nephews and nieces. 

He was preceded in death by son, Scott Steinert; parents, William and Annie Steinert; parents-in-law, Ed and Marietta Vander Vorst; brothers, Leo Steinert and Leonard Steinert; sister, Delores (Hjalmar) Bergquist; brothers-in-law, Lloyd Asplund, Arvid Backman, and Gerald Vander Vorst; and sister-in-law, Lyndel Tschritter.
